It is about an approach to librarianship that is guided by creative thinking and contemplation about what we do and how we do it. It is about exploring new resources and new technologies and reflecting on how they fit into the library’s culture and yield specified outcomes before adopting them. It is about designing both objects—particularly digital materials that enhance learning—and experiences. Those objects and experiences should advance the library user’s ability to conduct high-quality research.

In fact, I ended up cochairing the Internet Trainers Group as the result of a “brown-bag lunch” meeting of GPLLA librarians. The committee met monthly and discussed teaching, tips, and technology tools. One of the presenters was the then-director of the Instructional Design and Technology master’s program at Philadelphia University. Along with a graduate student, the director gave a sample of the capstone projects from students enrolled in the program. I was impressed with the depth of the design and development and the final products created.

The students caught the spirit of the project and provided fresh perspectives for us. Their “ideal” web page has our web team busy rethinking the The Blended Librarian in Action | 37 purpose and design of the libraries’ web presence. In another workshop, twentysix students sketched layouts for a large public space in the main library scheduled for renovation. It seemed as if they had been waiting for the opportunity to tell us what they wanted. Another idea garnered from watching the interviews was to conduct observations of specific physical spaces and facilities at varying times and places in the libraries.
